SIGN-UP POST: Shadow Märchen
☠ WITCHES bring seeds of catastrophe to this world.
☾ SHADOWS hold the terror of absolute death.
Here's the big reveal: both of them are actually you.
Or your character, anyway...
★ ground rules and basics
1. This is a plot about exploring characters' darkest innermost selves through metaphor and symbolism. It will get trippy.
2. It takes place from February 1st through February 9th. But participants will have plenty to plan, so I'm throwing up sign-ups now. I'll be making some more posts for reminders and planning as the month goes on.
3. Each player may sign up one character to be affected, although more than that can get involved. The possibility exists for affected characters to die; make sure you clear that with the mods on the plotting post if that's the route you take.
★ so what's going to happen?
It's all down to bad timing. At the end of January, Kyouko and Minako will both be 'Ported out--and then 'Ported back in at the same time. Through a freak accident, this will result in their powers being temporarily merged via the objects that represented them in their worlds: Minako's Evoker and Kyouko's Soul Gem. Since the Soul Gem is actually Kyouko, she'll be trapped in this hybrid "Soul Evoker" and will start to try to reach out to bring her body back in existence.
But because the merger unlocks the deepest, darkest aspects of Minako and Kyouko's powers, Kyouko won't summon her body--she'll summon monsters based on the dark sides of other imPorts.
It'll be up to everyone else to conquer those monsters, those shadow witches, through a combination of fighting and convincing people to accept themselves.
★ what are these monsters anyway?
Shadow Selves in Persona are embodiments of all the things about one's self that a person has refused to acknowledge and repressed. All the dark things they don't want to admit exist in their selves? The Shadow will shout those to the heavens and gleefully flaunt them, all while looking just like the character's regular self except for glowing golden eyes. As for the witches of Madoka Magica, they're the psychedelic, symbolic monsters (examples here, here, and here) that emerge from a magical girl when she falls into despair; they embody, in a metaphorical sense, the things that drove her to despair and the personality traits that emerge most prominently when she fell, all cranked up to eleven in the freakiest possible way. Both Shadow Selves and witches hide in a symbolism-laden magical labyrinth representing the darkest recesses of the mind of the person from whom they originate.
Shadow witches are a combination of both of these: the actual beings are monsters incapable of coherent communication representing the darkest and most dysfunctional parts of a person in a metaphorical way, but their shadow is in the shape of the person they came from and can talk. In fact, it can even post to the network--at least before it retreats to a labyrinth and is cut off from outside communication.
★ how will things go down?
1. Characters affected start turning into shadow witches. This doesn't have to happen immediately at the start of the plot; it can happen any time before February 8th.
2. The "shadow" parts of the witches can make a post to the network broadcasting their newfound dark natures, flaunting all those awesome dark things that the character would not normally want to admit, and inviting others to their upcoming labyrinth. This isn't required, but it provides something to do with this plot that's less personal and also doesn't involve combat. Here is an example of what such a network post might be like.
3. The shadow witches create their labyrinths in a space in the City no larger than a medium-sized building (don't worry, they can be bigger on the inside--they're a pocket dimension, after all) and disappear into them.
4. "Familiars" spawned from the witches roam about outside, attacking people (natives and imPorts alike) and trying to drag people with some connection to them (imPorts only--natives can't enter the labyrinths) into the labyrinths.
5. Friends and other people (whether there of their own choice or dragged inside by familiars) enter the labyrinths to rescue the people who've been turned into shadow witches. This is important, because without the help of others, the shadow witches will drain the life force of the person they come from in five days maximum and cause them to die. However, most people should be able to break out of their labyrinths and return to their normal selves in one to three days, because...
6. Other people who've entered the labyrinths, upon reaching the center of them, can call out to their friend (or whatever the victim is to them) to wake up their awareness within the shadow witch. The shadow witch will still try to fight anyone in the labyrinth, and beating it down will weaken it, but ultimately, the character affected will need to accept this dark side as part of their true self to return to normal. If the shadow witch is fully defeated without this happening, the character affected will die.
7. Regardless of how it happens--whether through pure combat (and a resulting death) or from the character affected accepting their true self--when the shadow witch is defeated, the labyrinth vanishes and the place it occupied goes back to normal.
8. After February 9th, Minako and anyone she's recruited to help her with this will track down the Soul Evoker and manage to break it apart, allowing Kyouko to return to her body and Soul Gem and Minako to take back her Evoker. The plot will finally end.
★ what if I have questions?
Comment here with them, or contact me at Annwyd Hates You on AIM or
annwyd. Abby (Minako's player) can also help explain things; she can be reached at Joie de Combat on AIM.
If you want to sign up a character, comment here with which character you're signing up! You can do this at any time up to the end of the month before the plot starts. I'll keep putting up reminders that this post exists.
