Now, as for the gem-as-summoning: the structure of the idea is approved -- but it can only summon one wolf at a time (either normal, or dire) since everyone else is limited to one sentient creature taken with them. You can rationalize this as a a single wolf who, under certain (dire, perhaps) circumstances, can have a "direwolf phase".
