I should also note, in case you didn't know, while it's never explained why this happens, but when Usopp shoots the seeds of these plants they grow instantly. You don't have to add it to your plot if you don't want (can make the excuse they're too young even though..the plants come out giant sized from the seeds), but if you wanted more havoc to be wrought...
