THE REBOOTENING: the (almost) final frontier
Without further ado, welcome, Heroes, to the future. Well, almost.
Before we begin:
If you are a current player that is interested in staying for the reboot and you have not commented to THIS thread, please do so before 12:01 Monday (the 13th) morning.
Failure to do so will mean you and your characters will be considered dropped and you will have to wait until applications open in February to re-apply.
This post will serve three functions:
1. to delve into some further detail regarding some particular worldbuild functions that will be relevant to know particularly for the workshopping process, or that may have been tweaked since the last post, and general workshop expectations
2. to arrange jobs and housing for current characters since obviously they are bypassing the get-sorted-upon-app-acceptance part of this process, and what characters may bring with them from
capeandcowl to
maskormenace
3. to plot on! Much like a regular CR/plotting post, players can post top-level comments for themselves and their characters with what ideas they'd like to pursue in the reboot so far and what they might be looking for, just to start things on a solid note. Plan out as much or as little as you'd like to.
expectations
So you may be wondering: How is this transition going to work, exactly? Well, ideally pretty smoothly! You can refer to the Calendar (to which some edits may be made as the workshop proceeds based on the information we'll have at that point), but basically...
The
capeandcowl endgame concludes on Tuesday the 14th. The reboot workshop at
maskormenace begins on the 15th (make sure you've joined all the relevant communities by then!) and characters remaining with us will find themselves in Cape Canaveral by way of the Porter there. Since this will be the "first wave" of imPorts's triumphant return to this universe ("second wave" being when applications open in Feburary, of course!) they will be then ushered from the Porter lab to the room where the Swearing In ceremonies -- ICly the functions where newly arrived imPorts pledge an oath of loyalty to the military, or opt not to and be labelled "unsettled", OOCly what will serve as an intro mingling log particularly once we have a regular schedule to application cycles -- are held. They'll perform the Swearing In procedures and then be escorted to their homes as per the standard arrival process. At the end of that same week on the 18th we will put the "Assignments" post, which will contain a list of mini-events and plots characters and players can dip their feet into, as well as OOC goals and guidelines we'd like to have met over the course of the reboot. On the 7th of February we will hold our "Activity Check."
As you can probably imagine, Activity Check/standards will function a bit differently during the workshopping process. Rather than players and characters having to meet a post/log/thread minimum, there will be goal minimums that players will be asked to meet both so that we can see that they're active and engaged in helping to finalize the setting, and so we can have the setting finalized and any kinks worked out on schedule so that, heaven forbid, nothing else needs to get pushed back. That's not to say players shouldn't make posts/logs/threads, because of course the name of the game is actually playing! Simply that during this period AC in particular will require, also, a different sort of participation. Clearer guidelines for these goals will be given along the first "Assignment" post.
For additional incentive, if these goals are met at a rate that exceeds our expectations and players feel comfortable with what they're doing in the setting, we will consider posting the test drive meme earlier!
There will be a feedback post pinned to the top of the OOC community once the reboot begins where players can bring to us their suggestions, critiques, or let us know what they're enjoying! We hope that the process will be a smooth one and that there may not be need for many changes, but if anything isn't working for you we'd love to know what it is and why and we'll do our best to solve the problem. There's still room for compromise in the details and the setting mechanics and we are willing to hear your suggestions, though ultimately not all of them might be implementable.
One of the things players will be able to help define especially during this workshopping process is how the retro/future/present is defined. What's fashion like? Architecture? Does music come most commonly on CDs, records, or digital files? Non-military weapons technology? Crime? Drugs? Slang? Other trends, outdated or invented? Food? Pretty much anything that does not contradict anything already established in the Setting, History, FAQ, or Locations pages. To give you an idea, here are some of the present distinctions:
You don't have to come up with anything yet! Brainstorm, talk amongst yourselves, think about what might be fun to play with, and bring it to us during the workshop! Feel free to bring your other setting-appropriate suggestions to us, as well.
details, changes, & more things to know
Another thing you may be wondering is about your characters' current possessions, businesses, and so on. What happens do them? What can be brought into the reboot? We came at this question from two sides, one being that we don't want to force players to start completely from scratch when they have, over time, invested in the game enough to build up something, and the other being we don't want players to feel complacent or stagnated by allowing everything to carry over exactly as is.
Characters may bring over one "bundle" of belongings: this can be anything from "their scientific research" to "their library" to "their classic car collection" (so it doesn't have to be one item, but the group of items should relate somehow). In addition to this, players may carry over one "establishment" that a character of theirs has founded or further developed. We know this may cause some inconvenience to players with multiple businesses and the like, but we want to encourage people to begin on new foundations in the reboot! Characters are welcome to rebuild, of course; after all, it isn't impossible to get a loan and open a business particularly in such a booming, imPort-positive economy, we just ask you to bear some realism in mind and not have the process take under a couple of months. (Such developments will of course have to be run by the Plotting post before a comment to the Locations post is made.)
Further! As far as ImPort Police and similar "local" establishments, we'd like to confirm that yes, an ImPort division can be instated and no, it will not be met with much pushback (ICly, this sort of thing and anything similar might take a couple of weeks, if pursued). ImPort police may have difference freedoms than native police, however, due to their particular function in the community; although one can opt for a strictly local beat, by default imPort police will be allowed jurisdiction in all four major Porter cities and thus can travel freely among them should they wish to.
Now, native OCs will serve a unique function within the game. As native OCs will be, obviously, OCs that are native to Mask or Menace's universe, they will have the unique "privilege" to be unpowered by default. If you have ever wanted to play a "normal" character opposite all of our supers, this is your chance! Powers are Porter-given, so reasonably, those that come into this universe are the ones that will be endowed with powers where they once had none. That is not to say there won't ever be plots that might change this non-powered status quo, temporarily or otherwise, but as it stands this is how it will be. Native OCs = no powers, regular OCs = powers. Pretty straightforward, hopefully! The FAQ and app guidelines have been edited to reflect this.
your characters
Since current characters will not be subject to the new app system, we ask that all players to reply to THIS thread and fill out the form provided for each of their characters so that a mod can reply to you with details about your character's new job and their new house. If you opt into a rooming situation where your character may be RNG'd a housemate from any other current character who opts into the same, feel free to plot with your new housemates in this post! Also feel free to plot with your potential new coworkers, employees, or employers if you are assigned a job that aligns with another characters's, or aligns with a business that is being brought over.
plotting!
Finally, the plotting part! Feel free to fill out the following form within a comment thread of your own like you would do on a CR meme; be as vague or as detailed as you like. If you do this, please reply to other people as well!
As a reminder, reboot questions can be asked here; thank you for reading and have fun!

- Cars can hover or drive on the ground, but the models don't resemble anything past the 1960s
- It is legal to smoke indoors
- iPods exist; so do jukeboxes, and they are the non-personal sound system of choice
- The economy resembles the US post-WWII economy -- a boom, so prices are low
- Race/gender/sex sentiments and politics are more akin to what they are now than what they were in the 50s
- Appearance can be altered or shape/health maintained by a variety of cosmetic health pills or nanite injections
- Space travel is still in the early stages of development
- Widespread transporation technology is in development but not readily available outside of military control yet
- (& so on)

- CHARACTER NAME: Self-explanatory!
CHARACTER AGE: So we know if they're old enough to work or if they'll still be in school.
CHARACTER'S JOB (CANON): Their job in canon if applicable. If not, special skills?
CHARACTER JOB (GAME): Their previous job in-game, if different from in canon.
CURRENT ROOMMATES: Will your character be living alone or with roommates? If it's the latter, who are they?
FUTURE ROOMMATES: Would you like to opt-in to potentially have additional roommates randomly assigned to your character's home now or in the future? (N/A if already four to a home.)
plotting!
Finally, the plotting part! Feel free to fill out the following form within a comment thread of your own like you would do on a CR meme; be as vague or as detailed as you like. If you do this, please reply to other people as well!
- CHARACTER NAME: Self-explanatory!
CANON: Also self-explanatory.
JOB/AFFILIATIONS: What was their job? Who were they allied with? Friends with? Or even enemies with?
POWERS: Also self-explanatory! What are their powers?
IDEAS: Do you have a direction in mind for your character yet? Plans? Plots? Ideas in general that could use another pair of eyes? This is where you can talk about government affiliation choices if you feel the urge.
LOOKING FOR: Is there anything you want? Coworkers? Teammates? Rivals? Roommates? Absolutely anything.
As a reminder, reboot questions can be asked here; thank you for reading and have fun!
KIRSTEN
CANON: Homestuck
JOB/AFFILIATIONS: N/A OFFICIALLY, unofficially the unwanted orphan of trollteam, has known/pissed off/killed like two thirds of city hall at some point tbh
POWERS: HOPE MANIPULATION!!, troll/human transformation, shooting holes in things with what definitely isn't magic
IDEAS: Will initially swear loyalty! Will immediately default on it whenever something more opportune comes up, because hey, morally bankrupt teen tyrant and also working is for the poors. Now that he's been shaken out of his "too comfortable to bother" lifestyle, I'm also looking to take him towards a more openly villainous bent! Less "wow that kid's an asshole," more "wow that kid's an asshole and also psychotic, let's hit him." Drama over this sudden and inevitable betrayal is expected, and would also be fabulous! I can definitely see him eventually getting sore over the government life (not necessarily doing good or being law abiding, but being treated ~like everyone else~) and eventually looking for people to go rogue with, if that's something your character(s) might be interested in!
LOOKING FOR: Since he'll likely be enrolled in school (public school!!), people in his own age bracket to get to know in those few months before he gets kicked out for fighting would be great! Other people to complain about the state of events with/go halfsies on an apartment or something/otherwise hang around with, other morally bankrupt people to be morally bankrupt with/at, maybe even a team some time/eventually!! Maybe some long suffering friends to talk about trashy tv shows and his feelings with! Shenanigans and dumb shit in general are always fully welcome because dang I love it. He's also open for roommates, but god, why would you.
